One of the most surprising things about transportation in Korea is the advantageous transfer system. In Korea, if you transfer between buses or between buses and the subway within 30 minutes, the transfer fee is either free or you will only be charged for the fare difference! This system can significantly save on transportation costs. In this article, I will explain this cost-saving system!
Table of Contents
1. How to Transfer Using Public Transportation in Korea
The transfer method is super simple! You just need to tap your card on the machine when boarding and when exiting. If no transfer is needed, you don’t need to tap the card when getting off. This applies to both bus ⇔ subway transfers as well, so it’s definitely a system you should take advantage of (˘︶˘). However, cash payments are not eligible for discounts, so please be aware! If you want to enjoy the discount, make sure to pay by card! If you’re unsure which card to use, I recommend the WOWPASS, which is convenient for issuing and charging👛.
2. Fare Example
Now, let me show you a picture of the time I transferred from one bus to another. This time, I transferred from a standard bus (blue) to an express bus (orange). As shown in the picture, you can check how much was charged, so it might be a good idea to verify it yourself!
Normally, the fare for an express bus is 2,100 KRW, but since I transferred from a standard bus (1,550 KRW), only the difference of 550 KRW was charged🎀.
3. Conclusion
In this article, I introduced the cost-saving fare rules that you can use in Korea✨. I didn’t know about this system at first, and I felt like I missed out when I found out (cries). Be sure to take advantage of this system early on, and enjoy exploring Korea affordably😊!
